Easter Local Trading (Waitaki)
Politicians are constantly trying to liberalise the Easter trading laws in
their local areas –one by National MP Jacqui Dean in her Waitaki
electorate, and another by Rotorua’s National MP Todd McClay. They
argued that local communities should have the choice to open at Easter.
But opponents argued that retail workers would not have the choice
whether to work or not. Many countries have public holidays with shops
closed, and tourists simply plan around it, accepting it as part of the local
culture and identity.
