I will support the efforts to do so.

Enabling the provision of more affordable housing will be a key focus if I am re-elected to lead the Auckland Council. We have already passed the Unitary Plan, which provides for new land to be freed up in a managed fashion that won’t see ugly unplanned urban sprawl across the countryside. I’ve worked closely with the Government in putting together a Housing Accord that will see fast-tracking of consents in “special housing areas”, and I will make sure affordable housing continues to be a priority.

The question is misdirected because land-banking by speculators and developers and a market dominated by property investors are the main reasons for the lack of affordable housing. The greatest need in Auckland is for affordable rental housing and as our first priority Mana will build 20,000 affordable council rental homes to meet this need. Mana would drive property investors – both local and overseas – out of the property market with a tough capital gains tax and provide Kiwibank Home Ownership Accounts to provide low interest loans to first home buyers.

I will ensure that the communities are consulted to understand where they are happy with growth. I will plan for a new CBD in Manukau which will not only build homes but add to new businesses and jobs as well as helping the communities in that area. It will be a green city, and allow people to work close to their home. Housing Accord is signed with the Central Government, Municipal Urban Limits issue is addressed for possible adjustment, mixed housing zones established with consensus, and that more homes are built to help put downward pressure on prices.
