Easter Sunday Local Choice
Shop Trading Hours Act 1990 Repeal (Easter Sunday Local Choice) Amendment Bill
Rotorua National MP Todd McClay introduced a bill which would have allowed local communities, such as tourist towns like Rotorua, to make their own decisions about allowing shops to open on Easter Sunday. Opponents argued that families and communities should come before commerce. The Easter Sunday trading laws are inconsistent across the country, but wholesale liberalisation is not the answer. The bill was defeated at 1st reading. (December 2009)
