Decriminalising Light Smacking
Politicians had the opportunity to support a bill that would have decriminalized light and non-abusive smacking for the purpose of correction. This would have removed the fear and uncertainty around the anti-smacking law which currently exposes good parents to investigation and prosecution by either CYF or Police. Of most concern was that this proposed amendment to the law was virtually identical to that aggressively lobbied for by the current National-led government when in opposition! Polls continue to show that 80% of NZ'ers support this amendment.
